The Senate has unanimously confirmed Norman Mineta as Secretary of Transportation. While the Commerce Committee approved Mineta's nomination
earlier today, the hearing continues and is being aired on CSPAN. The
consensus among Committee members was the need to improve the infrastructure and focus on capacity
enhancements.
Mineta stated that transportation is the key to productivity, economic growth, and global economy. He commented on the formidable challenges
ahead, but reminded Committee members that guaranteeing the safety of the traveling public was the number one job for DOT. Mineta commented that the
country will be faced with similar, if not worse, delays this year. And that while AIR-21 provides the needed capital, it is very difficult to
expand capacity quickly. He noted that the airlines, airports and air traffic control system are all struggling to keep up with demand. The
federal government needs to find ways to better meet the challenges facing the aviation industry. A great deal of the discussion was focused around
industry consolidation. Mineta commented that the federal government has a responsibility to ensure competition continues.
A number of Senators commented on bills they plan to introduce. Senator Wyden intends to reintroduce his Passenger Bill of Rights. Senator Hollings
is working on legislation to break up the hubs to restore real competition.
Senator Stevens intends to introduce a bill dealing with aviation capacity.
Mineta was chairman of the National Civil Aviation Review Commission. A copy of the 1997 report, executive summary, committee hearings, etc. can be
